Matsumoto IC – Takayama IC (via Route 158)

From Matsumoto IC on the Nagano Expressway, National Route 158 to Nakanoyu, the Abo Toge Road (toll) to Hirayu, Route 158 again to Takayama-nishi, then the toll-free Chubu-Jukan Expressway to Takayama IC. A mostly ordinary-road crossing of the Northern Alps between Matsumoto and Hida-Takayama.

From the NEXCO Drive Plaza toll and route search (standard car, departure set to 10:00 on 4 Nov 2026, searched on 27 Oct 2026): the first route by toll, which includes National Route 158 (an ordinary road). Local roads before Matsumoto IC and after Takayama IC are not included

• National Route 158 has been fully closed at Shioya, Nyukawa-cho, Takayama since a landslide on 25 February 2026 (as of October 2026; Gifu Prefecture aims to reopen it by the end of March 2027). The prefecture asks drivers to take wider detours via Routes 41, 471 and 361. Check Gifu Prefecture's latest notice before you go.
• The only toll is the Abo Toge Road (Nakanoyu–Hirayu, 5.6 km): 790 yen for a standard car, the same with ETC or cash (Drive Plaza search)
• Of the 96.3 km, 84.2 km is on National Route 158, an ordinary road (Matsumoto–Nakanoyu 40.5 km, Hirayu–Takayama-nishi 43.7 km) (Drive Plaza route display)
• To Takayama-nishi IC instead: 89.8 km, 1 h 48 min (Drive Plaza search)
• Using expressways only (Chuo, Tokai-Kanjo and Tokai-Hokuriku Expressways) it is 301.1 km, 3 h 53 min, 6,980 yen with ETC (Drive Plaza search)
• In winter, roads in Gifu Prefecture may be closed early during heavy snow for concentrated snow clearing, and national roads running parallel to expressways may be closed at the same time; NEXCO may also close expressways as a precaution.
