Yamadera (Hojusan Risshakuji Temple)

An old temple in Yamagata City with halls built across a rocky mountainside. There is no official temple car park; use the paid lots nearby. About 1 h 30 min by car from Sendai and about 30 min from Yamagata Station (Yamadera Tourism Association). Admission 500 yen for adults (cash only).

April–November 8:00–16:00 (gates close 17:00); December–March 8:30–15:00 (gates close 16:00). Gates may close earlier in winter because of weather
