Mt Fuji and Hakone road trip: Tokyo to Kawaguchiko, Gotemba, Hakone

Updated: Facts checked:

Key points

  • In summer you cannot drive a private car up to the Mt Fuji 5th Stations. In 2026 the Fuji Subaru Line was closed to private cars from 3 July 18:00 to 10 September 18:00, and the Fuji Azami Line from 1 July 9:00 to 10 September 18:00.
  • During those bans, park at Fujisan Parking (for the Subaru Line) or the transfer car park at Michi-no-Eki Subashiri (for the Azami Line) and change to a shuttle bus or taxi.
  • Owakudani in Hakone gives off volcanic gas. You may be asked to shelter indoors, the road to it is closed from 17:00 to 9:00, and the car park closes in the late afternoon.
  • From Chofu IC, Kawaguchiko IC is about 63 minutes (86.2 km). From Tokyo IC, Gotemba IC is about 56 minutes and Odawara-Nishi IC, towards Hakone, about 53 minutes.
  • Standard-car tolls from Tokyo were ¥2,040 to ¥2,620 with ETC in our Drive Plaza search.

This guide starts in Tokyo. From Chofu IC, the Chuo Expressway takes you to Kawaguchiko IC at the Fuji Five Lakes in about 63 minutes. From Tokyo IC, the Tomei Expressway reaches Gotemba IC in about 56 minutes, and the route towards Hakone reaches Odawara-Nishi IC in about 53 minutes. Before you plan, note two things: in summer you cannot drive a private car up to the Mt Fuji 5th Stations, and Owakudani in Hakone has volcanic-gas rules.

Can I drive to the Mt Fuji 5th Station?

Not in summer. During the private-car restriction (maika kisei), private cars cannot use the Fuji Subaru Line or the Fuji Azami Line. Park at the transfer car park and take a shuttle bus or taxi.

Electric and fuel-cell cars are exempt from the Subaru Line ban, but you must have the car checked at Fujisan Parking first, with its vehicle inspection certificate. It cannot be done at the Subaru Line entrance.

The dates change every year, so check the prefecture’s page for your trip. Fujisan Parking is open 24 hours during the restriction and 9:00–17:00 at other times. It is closed from 1 December to 31 March.

Outside the restriction, these times to the 5th Stations are given by the roadside stations:

From To Time by car

Michi-no-Eki Fuji-Oyama a Mt Fuji 5th Station (the road closes in winter) about 30 min

What should I know before visiting Owakudani?

  • When gas levels rise, an announcement may ask you to shelter indoors. Follow it.
  • People with asthma, respiratory conditions or pacemakers are advised not to visit.
  • The nature trail is open only on guided tours.
  • The road from the Owakudani junction to Owakudani is closed at night, from 17:00 to 9:00.

Source: Drive Plaza toll and route search, standard car, weekday 10:00 departure (checked on 26 October 2026). Times are between interchanges only.

Except for Chofu IC – Kawaguchiko IC, the toll was the same with ETC and in cash in our weekday search. ETC discounts depend on the day and time, so check the official toll search for your own trip.

Some interchanges only work in one direction, according to Drive Plaza:

  • Tokyo IC only has an entrance towards Shizuoka and an exit from the Shizuoka direction.
  • Kawaguchiko IC has no ramps to or from the Higashi-Fuji-goko Road (Subashiri direction) or the Tomei Expressway direction.
  • Fujiyoshida IC only has an entrance towards Subashiri and an exit from the Subashiri direction.
  • At Odawara-Nishi IC you cannot go between the Seisho Bypass and ordinary roads.

Gotemba IC – Fujiyoshida IC includes about 10.5 km (about 16 minutes) of ordinary road on the National Route 138 bypass between Gotemba IC and Subashiri IC. Drive Plaza would not accept Takaido, where the Shuto Expressway joins the Chuo Expressway, as a start, so our figures start at Chofu IC.
